Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora on Monday accused the U.S. Department of Justice of launching its local public corruption probe two years ago in a conspiracy with Republicans to undermine the Democratic turnout for Barack Obama.
Dimora said he and his lawyers will ask the Justice Department and Congress to investigate the motives behind the corruption probe, which became public last July when FBI agents raided the commissioner's home and office and the home and office of political ally Frank Russo, the county auditor.
"This is a Republican-driven prosecution," Dimora said during a late-afternoon news conference at the county administration building. He said he believes national Republican Party strategist Karl Rove helped initiate the probe........

3.Thousands still in FEMA trailers (www.usatoday.com)
NEW ORLEANS — Four years since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, there are still nearly 3,000 mobile homes and trailers across the Gulf Coast housing victims of that disaster.
In Louisiana, there are 2,100 families living in trailers, most of them homeowners struggling to rebuild their homes, according to figures released by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Mississippi has 781 families in trailers. The numbers are down considerably from the 134,000 temporary trailers and mobile homes that dotted the Gulf Coast immediately after Katrina slammed the area in August 2005, leading to nearly 1,800 dead and thousands more homeless. Some trailer dwellers are also victims of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, which hit Louisiana last summer.

5.Hundreds of gulls killed, injured in polluted Ohio river (www.latimes.com)
Investigators believe it was cooking oil spewed from a sewer pipe.
Associated Press
June 28, 2009Cleveland -- Hundreds of gulls were killed or maimed in Cleveland after what investigators believe was cooking oil spewed from a sewer pipe into the Cuyahoga River.
Investigators said Friday that several hundred gallons of the substance killed or disabled hundreds of gulls near the Kingsbury Run tributary.
Most of the birds are just downstream from the site where environmentalists last week celebrated the Cuyahoga River's comeback since floating oil and debris caught fire on June 22, 1969.
The burning river became a standing joke and a symbol of urban decay and runaway pollution.
Dozens of sludge-covered gull carcasses could be seen by rowers with the Cleveland Rowing Foundation early Friday, most near a sprawling steel mill site near downtown Cleveland.
