2.Blackhawk helicopters buzz downtown in military exercise (latimesblogs.latimes.com)
Night-time military helicopter flights over downtown Los Angeles this week are part of training exercises to familiarize military personnel with urban settings and prepare them for future assignments overseas, according to authorities.
The helicopters, which have appeared nightly for almost a week, have attracted the attention of residents as they hover over downtown landmarks like City Hall, or maneuver quickly between office skyscrapers on Bunker Hill. While many residents speculated that the diving and climbing helicopters were part of a movie shoot, authorities confirmed Wednesday that they were part of a joint exercise.
A short notice saying the LAPD would be supporting an urban military exercise was posted on the department's official blog.
The notice says the exercises started June 15 and are scheduled to end Saturday and that they will occur throughout Greater Los Angeles.
Authorities said training sites and times have been selected so they do not disrupt the daily routines of businesses and residents. Safety precautions have also been taken to protect the public and military personnel. The training is not open to the public.

The Navy’s recent mine-hunting efforts have proved imperfect. In 2003, they credited the deployment of dolphins with clearing 100 underwater mines from the Persian Gulf. But the dolphins require lengthy training and a human handler at all times. And then there’s that constant harping from animal advocacy groups. In 2007, Lockheed Martin created a Remote Minehunting System, which got a test run on the Bainbridge destroyer. A 2008 report from the ship’s skipper, Commander Stephen Coughlin, cited “growing pains” using the unwieldy ‘bot, which is lifted from the water using a giant hook, precision timing - and luck.....

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — The Navy is aware of a North Korean live-fire military exercise the communist nation said it will hold at sea, but isn’t commenting on whether it will affect 7th Fleet operations.
North Korea plans to conduct drills in waters off Wonsan between Thursday and July 10 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., according to an e-mail sent Monday by North Korea to Japan’s coast guard.
"We do monitor notices to mariners and airmen and are certainly aware when countries establish temporary closure areas like this," 7th Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Davis said. He declined, as per Navy policy, to comment on any operations or say whether Navy ships will give the exercise area a wide berth........

6.Why Was Pakistan Drone Strike So Deadly? (www.wired.com)
The latest drone strike in Pakistan is apparently the deadliest yet: Reports describe between 45 and 70 dead and many injured. The details are far from clear, but we can at least answer some questions: is it really possible for a drone attack to be so lethal? Is new, more lethal weaponry being deployed?

7.Neo-Nazis are in the Army Now (alexconstantine.blogspot.com)
June 15, 2009 | On a muggy Florida evening in 2008, I meet Iraq War veteran Forrest Fogarty in the Winghouse, a little bar-restaurant on the outskirts of Tampa, his favorite hangout. He told me on the phone I would recognize him by his skinhead. Sure enough, when I spot a white guy at a table by the door with a shaved head, white tank top and bulging muscles, I know it can only be him........
